U.S. exports of hardwood veneer to Europe increased 2.3% in volume to 58.0 million m2 but declined by 0.5% in value to $84.7 million during 2015 (Table 1). The U.S. export figures align with reports on the overall condition of the European veneer market which has seen some recovery from the very weak conditions prevailing in 2013 but which continues to suffer from historically low levels of consumption and intense competition from non-wood surfaces. The weakness of the euro, which on average was around 20% lower against the dollar in 2015 compared to 2014, was another drag on US exports to Europe in 2015.
